Get ready to transform yourself from a Professional to Practitioner

When you search for 'Practitioner' in google, entire page filled only with doctor and medical industry images.

This question is in my mind for long time, why we (IT professionals) don't call ourselves as IT practitioners ? Either we call ourselves as IT professional or with the nature of job like Java developer, UI developer, AWS Solution architect, etc.

Practitioner is someone who uses their knowledge to solve customer problems. Like Doctor or Lawyer, aren't we supposed to solve enterprise business problems using apt technology tools.

It's unfortunate to see, most people in IT industry become less valuable as they become more senior, unlike in other industries.

I see a need for fundamental mind shift of IT professionals from doer to problem solver by equipping themselves with all latest and greatest technology happenings knowledge in the problem & solution domain space.

It's a time IT professionals get ready to become IT practitioners to sustain in this profession beyond 20 years of their career.

IT practitioner need to possess certain other qualities (mindset & skillset) outside of their strong technology skills.

Here are the top ten qualities of IT Practitioners

  • Empathy: Your fundamental nature of work is solving your stakeholder’s problem. Understand, If there is no problem, then you don't have a job. Never feel stressed out with problems. Learn the art of identifying the real needs/pain points of your stakeholders while removing the noises.
  • Problem Solving: Learn various problem-solving techniques and apply them effectively using your strengths
  • Collaboration: Become comfortable to seek experts help for effective solution without wasting time. Don't try to learn everything from your own mistakes.
